NOTE: Single dose container for intravenous infusion. Discard remaining solution after use. Insert spike when the bottle is in upright position.
Prolong or rapid administration of hypertonic glucose solution may result in dehydration as a consequence of the induced hyperglycaemia, and may lead to glycosuria and osmotic diuresis.
The use of such solution in pregnancy should be carried out with caution to avoid possible risks to the foetus.
Intravenous infusion of glucose solutions at an hourly rate of 500mg/kg will cause glycosuria, about 95% is retained when the rate is 800mg/kg while at half this rate 100% retention is achieved.
Intravenous infusion of hypertonic glucose solution may cause local vein irritation near the site of the injection thereby causing thrombophlebitis.
Excess or too rapid administration may cause headache, seizures and respiratory arrest.
As prescribed by the physician.
The infusion is to be administered slowly by the intravenous route only.
50% Glucose solution for parenteral nutrition are given by central venous catheter to minimize reactions.
The intravenous dose for glucose infusion is variable and is dependent on individual patient requirement; serum glucose concentrations may need to be carefully monitored.
Unidex – 50 is presented in 100ml LDPE bottle.
