Pentazocine Injection B.P.
For use only of a Registered Medical Practitioner or a Hospital or a Laboratory only.
Each ml contains:
Pentazocine B.P. 30 mg
Sodium Chloride B.P. 2.8 mg
Water for Injection B.P. q.s.
Mode of action
It is partial agonist at opioid receptors and is effective in mild to moderate pain.
Onset of action
Within 1 hour.
Dizziness, nausea, vomiting, euphoria, sweating, respiratory depression, sedation, tachycardia, palpitation and hypertension. It has abuse potential.
Hypertension with Myocardial Infraction (IV administration) and children.
To be used with great caution in patients with head injury, raised ICP, depressed respiration, in patients receiving other CNS depressant drugs and MAO inhibitors. Naloxone is specific antagonist for respiratory depression. Avoid movement for 15 minutes after injection.
Use with caution.
Safety not established.
In elderly patients
May be given in reduced dose.
Alcohol: increased CNS depressant effects.
Barbiturate anaesthetics: May increase respiratory and CNS depression effects.
Moderate to severe pain associated with surgery, trauma, burns, colics, cancer. Pre-anaesthetic medication. In labour.
Adults: Injection: 30-60 mg IM or 30 mg IV may be repeated 3-4 hourly. Doses in excess of 30 mg IV or 60 mg SC or IM not recommended Max. daily dose: 360 mg.
In labour: 30 mg IM or 20 mg IV Max: 2-3 doses. Tabs 25-100 mg repeated when necessary Max. 600 mg daily.
Children: Not for children below 12 years.
Avialable in 1 ml flint glass ampoules (10 ampoules in a carton).
Store at temperature 8oC-25oC and away from light.
