Composition

Each tablet contains: Metformin hydrochloride 500mg BP

 
Indications

Gluformin is indicated in:

-Diet-failed, maturity onset or Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM), especially if overweight;

(a) alone as initial therapy

(b) combination therapy with a sulphonylurea.

-Adjuvant therapy in Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM), especially if overweight.

 
Dosage

1.5g – 3g a day in three divided doses i.e. 1 or 2 tablets three times daily.

It is important that Gluformin should be taken with, or just after a meal.

 
Side Effects

Side effect of Metformin include diarrhoea, abdominal discomfort, nausea, metallic taste, and anorexia. These are usually minimized by increasing the dosage of the drug slowly and taking with meals. Absorption of Vitamin B12 may be impaired.

 
Contra-indication

Gluformin is contraindicated in the following conditions, Diabetic coma, and ketoacidosis, impaired renal or hepatic functions, heart failure, alcoholism, or other conditions likely to predispose to lactic acidosis. Insulin is preferred for the treatment of pregnant patients.

 
Interaction

May interact with other compounds, notably Cimetidine.
