INTRODUCTION

EMZOCLOX is a broad spectrum antibiotic formulation of Ampicillin and penicillinase stable Cloxacillin. Emzoclox exhibits bactericidal activity against a wide range of Gram-positive, organisms such a Staphylococci, D Pneumoniae Clostridia, B Anthracis and most strains of Enterococcus and Gram-negative organism such as H. lnfluenza Brucella melitensis and Brucella abortus. Proteus mirabilis. Salmonella, Shigella, E, Coli and Neieseria Species.

 

ABSORPTION AND EXCRETION

Ampicillin and Cloxacillin are individually acid stable and are easily absorbed when administered before meals to produce good serum and urine concentrations. Higher and more prolonged levels may be achieved in patients with normal renal function by the concurrent administration of probenecid.

Emzoclox is predominantly excreted by glomerular filtration and renal tubular secretion.

 

INDICATIONS

Respiratory tract infections, Ears, Nose and Throat infections. Urinary tract infections, Gastro-intestinal infections, Skin and Soft tissue infections, Pelvic infections, Septicaemia, Endocarditis, Orthopaedic infections.

 

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

Administer ½ – 1 hour before meals

Children: Up to 2 years ½ teaspoonful every 6 hours

Children: 2 to 6 years 1 teaspoonful (5ml) every 6 hours

Children: 6 to 12 years 1 to 2 teaspoonful every 6 hours or as directed by the physician

Adults: 1-2 capsules every 6 hours or as directed by the physician.

 

CONTRA-INDICATIONS

Penicillin hypersensitivity

 

SIDE EFFECTS

As with other penicillins, side effects are usually of a mild and transitory nature. They may include diarrhoea, indigestion or occasionally rash-either urticarial which suggests penicillin hypersensitivity or erythematous. An erythematous rash may be caused in patients with glandular fever. In either case it is advisable to discontinue therapy.

 

PREPARATION OF THE NEONATAL ORAL DROPS

To reconstitute, add 8ml of recently boiled and cooled water to the powder and shake gently. Allow to settle and add more water up to mark of the label.

To be taken as directed by the physician.

Each 0.6ml contains 60mg of Ampicillin Trihydrate B.P. and 30mg of Cloxacillin Sodium B.P.

PREPARATION OF THE SUSPENSION

To make 100ml of the suspension, add 80ml of boiled and cooled water invert and shake the bottle until all powder is dispersed. Alternatively gradually add boiled and cooled water to half of the bottle. Shake well and slowly add more water up to the mark on the bottle.

STORAGE

The dry powder should be stored below 25oC. The suspension should be used within 7 days of preparation and stored in a cool place preferably in a refrigerator.

 

PRECAUTION

Reduced dosage is required with impaired renal functions e.g. Renal failure neonates and premature infants.

CAPSULES: 250mg Ampicillin as Ampicillin Trihydrate plus; 250mg Cloxacillin as Cloxacillin Sodium in packs of 1000’s

Also in blister packs of 10’s x 2, 10’s x 50, 10’s x 100.

SUSPENSION: 125mg Ampicillin as Ampicillin Trihydrate plus; 125mg  Cloxacillin as Cloxacillin Sodium per 5ml

DROPS: 60mg Ampicillin as Ampicillin trihydrates plus; 30mg Cloxacillin as Cloxacillin Sodium per 0.6ml
